Advanced portfolio briefs:

Brief 1:Documentary

An extract from a new documentary TV programme, lasting approximately five minutes choosing two of the following three options:

  • A radio trailer for the documentary

  • A double page spread from a listings magazine focused on the documentary

  • A newspaper advertisement for the documentary

Pros:

Led by research and information so suitable for those who aren't as creative

Can pick a topic you are passionate about and work off that

Cons:

Need a crew to film so very difficult to do it on your own

You would have to do lots of research on the topic and be led by that topic

This would be my least favourite choice for the A2 portfolio as documentaries tend to be quite fact based whereas I prefer producing products that are more creative and imaginative such as a short film or music video. Also I feel that documentaries tend to have a rigid structure to follow when making one, whereas music videos and short films are much more flexible.

Brief 2: Short Film

A short film in its entirety, lasting approximately five minutes, which may be live action or animated or a combination of both, together with two of the following three options:

  • A poster for the film

  • A radio trailer for the film

  • A film magazine review page featuring the film

Pros:

Have control over the product and can effectively do whatever you want to do, very imaginative product and can create a poster or dvd case to accompany it

Cons:

Requires a lot of work as you need to come up with all your own ideas

Heavily dependant on cinematography

The short film would be my second favourite choice. It would be fun to do but as we made a short film for our AS media studies portfolio I would like to expand and test my skills out in other areas to gain more expertise and skills in the media industry. Furthermore they can be quite risky if you do not have a strong idea of what you are doing.

​Brief 3: Music Video

A promotion package for the release of an album, to include a music promo video, of the following three options.

  • A website homepage for the band

  • A cover for its release as part of a digipak (CD/DVD package)

  • A magazine advertisement for the digipak (CD/DVD package)

Pros:

Lyrics in the songs give you direction and themes for the music video ideas, the sound track is already there for you to use and you can be imaginative with your ideas

Cons:

You have to do both a performance and a narrative, less creative control as it is led by the song and you have to get permission to use the song

This is my favourite choice for our product as music videos are fun and creative. The lyrics set as a basis for ideas and directions that you can go in to come up with ideas for your music video. I think this would be very helpful as you could use these guidelines to help create a strong and focused product with a clear storyline that links in with the lyrics.
