Chosen brief:

The brief we have chosen as a group is a music video.

A promotion package for the release of an album, to include a music promo video, of the following three options.

  • A website homepage for the band

  • A cover for its release as part of a digipak (CD/DVD package)

  • A magazine advertisement for the digipak (CD/DVD package)

Pros:

Lyrics in the songs give you direction and themes for the music video ideas, the sound track is already there for you to use and you can be imaginative with your ideas

Cons:

You have to do both a performance and a narrative, less creative control as it is led by the song and you have to get permission to use the song

Inspirational music videos:

As a group we decided after a long discussion to choose the music video to be our chosen brief. We were considering a short film but felt as we had done this for our AS brief we wanted to try our hand at something different. Also a music video would give us a great starting point with its lyrics whereas if we chose a short film we would have to come up with our own starting point and stem off from there. We wanted to try out different techniques such as using the drone and time lapse and we felt these would be most effective in a music video as it could make a short film seem quite abstract and experimental. A music video is also more relatable to our age group as teens spend 9 hours a day on average consuming media products and so a music video would appeal to them more. Furthermore a music video gives us all the backing tracks we will need and so we will not have to create them from scratch so it is a lot easier.

Choosing a song was one of the most difficult decisions in the process so far as we wanted to make sure it was a song with lots of character that we could use to create a really fun and strong video. We had looked at the history of music videos for inspiration for what makes them successful. The Michael Jackson ones were great to look at as they are so energetic and fun and each video has its own unique storyline which is attractive to the audience. Jess Glynnes 'Hold my hand' was also a brilliant one as it was very creative and out there and captivated the audience.
