Technique: Time Lapse

I was paired up with Saskia for the pre-planning to test out time lapse techniques. We were happy about this as we worked together on our AS production and so know we can trust each other to get the work done. Time lapse is an interesting technique to test out as it shows you which shots work effectively and which ones do not. We did lots of shots using water fountains, puddles and people running across a field. It was a very interesting technique to use as we could reverse, speed up and slow down the shots.

I also did a time lapse on my phone so that we could compare the quality of time lapse on a phone and on a camera. I used the time lapse app whilst I was at a festival and shot a 1 second clip of the crowds moving. This worked quite well and looked very appealing with all the bright colours. However next time I would film it for a longer period of time as 10 seconds of realtime footage compresses down to only 1 second.

We chose this technique to test out in the pre - planning stage so that we could see which shots it worked well with and how fast or slow we would have to edit them for it to work effectively if we used it in our music production.

Unfortunately we were given a camera which wasn't of the best quality and so the shots we took appear with a slightly grainy effect in the video. Next time we would make sure we have a camera with a better focus.

Furthermore I did not have that much storage on my phone so next time I would plan ahead to make sure that I did, so that I would then be able to film longer clips which would work more effectively in the time lapse app. I could also try out other shots such as ones of the crowd jumping to the music and use the slow-mo app. This would work really nicely as it would show the crowds and their reactions in a slower time.
