Digi-Paks are a type of packaging for CD's and DVD's. They contain the CD or DVD in a plastic internal holder along with a sleeve of notes containing either images or lyrics. I looked at some Digi-paks for inspiration for a possible ancillary idea for our product.

The first one I looked at was Rihanna's album 'Loud'. This one focuses on a strong image of Rihanna with vibrant red coloured hair which reflects the title of the album 'loud'. When the cover is opened up it shows a larger picture of Rihanna lying on a bed of red roses which accentuates the red of her lips and her hair. It contains two CD's and lyrics inside and focuses very heavily on the aspect of beauty by the use of vibrant makeup and roses which are renowned for being symbols of beauty and also mystery.

Digi-Pak:

The second Digi-Pak I looked at was Michael Jacksons album 'This Is It'. The front cover uses the image of Michael performing his iconic dance to attract the audience to buy his product. They have also filled in the image with brightly coloured photos of Michael's previous tours which make it more eye-catching. On the back of the Digi-Pak the songs on the CD are listed with another silhouette of Michael performing another iconic dance move. Inside you have a double page spread of a photo from his 'This is it tour' plus some lyrics pages so the audience can sing along to the songs. Then in an internal case there are two CD's onto which they have printed different images of iconic dance moves that Michael has performed in the past. This is keeping in with the theme of Michael's career and portrays him as the main key figure.

I also looked at Nicole Scherzingers Digi-Pak for her album 'Killer Love'. The front cover uses a close up of Nicole all glammed up wearing a fancy fur jacket. This gives the aura of glamour and beauty.

The colour scheme on this case is quite neutral with mostly greys and creams being used. This pulls your focus more to her face as it stands out against the neutral background.

On the back of the case is the list of songs found on the CD. The font used to quite a 'feminine font' with curls on some of the letters and adds to the theme of glamour that is presented on this album.

Generic conventions of Digi-Paks:

  1. The front of Digi-Paks tend to have a large eye-catching photo on the front to attract the attention of consumers and tends to have some sort of link to the artist or song.

  2. The song title or album name also tends to be on the front cover so the audience are fed that information straight away.

  3. On the back cover of Digi-Paks they include extra information such as the record label name, websites, the track list and a photo that tends to include the artist on.

  4. Inside they can include booklets complete with photos of the artist and lyrics or if not certain lyrics printed on the inside covers.

  5. Inside on one of the panels a plastic disc tray is found to hold the CD. Underneath this is usually a simpler looking photo so as not to detract from the CD itself.
