This music video has elements of a short story within it which are shown before the track is played in the video. The short introduction into the video shows a young woman photocopying whilst the male character stares at us, this sets the scene for the rest of the video and introduces the audience to the characters. During the video we see the daily struggles that the male character faces due to his deformity such as discrimination and his quest to get the woman he secretly likes. At the very end of the video a key message is revealed when the woman gives the man her mobile number and this is that the way people look isn't everything.

Camera:
  • When he goes home the mise en scene is dark, hiding his face, this makes him look like any other person and connotes that he is himself when he is alone. The video cuts between clips of him and his dog, showing him happy, then as he sits down we hear "You brought out the best in me" It suggests that he does have someone that loves him, however it saddens the audience as we realise it is in fact only his dog.

  • The lyrics "Our love was made for movie screens" is accompanied by the him holding a photograph of himself as a baby with what we can assume is his mother overlooking him with a large smile on her face. This is an over the shoulder shot so that even through the way he is sitting as he looks at the photograph we can see he is upset and longs for this love again.

Editing:
  • The song is quite a slow song and so the cuts used are slow paced.

  • To combat the lack of fast paced editing the cuts have to be short to maintain a balance.

  • Th video cuts between shots of the main male working but whenever he is shown the shot then focuses in on a person in the background or foreground watching him in disgust.

  • During the bridge of the song the music builds up as the male character goes to rescue the woman from the men harassing her. He begins to fight them as the music reaches its pinnacle point showing that this is a turning point in the video and emphasises how important this moment is.

Mise-en-scene:
  • In the mise-en-scene codes of dress are very important, the male actor is dressed in a suit and tie of light colours which portrays him as more innocent and enables the audience to sympathise with him.

  • This effect that the dress has on the audience helps them to relate and connect to his character more which is crucial in music videos as it makes them more successful if the audience feel they understand the characters more.

  • The female character however is deliberately displayed in a way that makes it harder to connect with. She is not a character that the audience sympathise or connect with at the beginning of the video, making her seem more distant.

  • As the video progresses and we see the female character coming in the firing line of three other office men, the audience start to sympathise a bit more with her as they can relate to intimidating experiences but their attention is then focused on the male who comes to rescue her.

  • In our video we want the audience to be able to relate to all characters as from our audience research we have found that they find relatable characters in music videos more inspirational than ones they cannot connect with.

Sound:
  • The soundtrack used is purposefully quite slow in order to make the audience feel sorry for the main guy in the video who clearly has some kind of deformity.

  • By making the audience feel this way towards the character it makes them connect more with the video making it successful

  • For our music video we must make sure that the sound track conveys the right emotions to the audience in order to make our video a success.

  • The lyrics "I lay in tears in bed all night, alone without you by my side" are used to explain his feelings for the woman; this has an effect on the audience as we know that she isn't interested.
