Magazine Advert:

This advert is for Jessie J's 'Who you are' album. It includes details such as some of the singles included and an official site for the artist which I think are really important details to include. The main image used if a close up of Jessie J herself with a hint of a gothic theme. She has jet black hair cut in a harsh bob and has very bold and dark makeup such as the black on her lips and the dark eye shadow as well as the black nail varnish. The use of this dark makeup makes her face look extra pale and so draws attention to a harsh side of her whilst also making her look strong and powerful. For my advert If I used a close up shot of the main actor I would want to focus heavily on the skeleton face makeup that we are using and so could take tips from the harsh colours used in this to create a sense of mystery and power.

The main focus of this image is the main artist Beyonce. The image is split into two with one side showing a natural side to her with very little makeup, dark colours and plain black clothing coupled with a cross on a chain which could express an emotional and vulnerable side of the album. On the other hand you have the second half of the split image where the artist Beyonce is represented as completely different. She is wearing much heavier makeup with a bold eyeliner and contouring which defines her cheekbones much more. Her hair is much bigger portraying her as a strong and independent woman which would appeal to the female target audience and make herself as the artist more relatable. The positioning of the words 'I am Sasha Fierce' on the magazine advert is very carefully placed as it reveals Beyonce's alter ego Sasha Fierce.

Drake has also taken quite a chilled approach towards his advert. He has merely used a simple photo of him looking down away from the camera with his name in block capitals across the top of the poster and some details about the songs underneath. With both of the male adverts I feel they have used objects to project their power and wealth rather than makeup like the girls have used. In this one Drake is seen holding a gold cup and is surrounded by gold candles and expensive looking paintings. This is his way of showing his wealth and power rather than using a heavily staged image.

This advert is a lot simpler than Beyonce's one and just uses a simple photo of Usher as the main image with the artist name and single title. I feel although this one isn't very colourful and doesn't use the same big, bold and brash techniques that the other one does, it is straight to the point and tells the audience what they need to know straight away. However it doesn't include an album title or release date and I would want to include something like this on my poster. This image is also very heavily based on male jewellery whereas with the female adverts they are heavily based on bold, strong makeup. This one is advertising male watches, belts and neck chains which promotes a sense of young, hip and trendiness.

Generic conventions of Magazine Adverts:

  1. Include the Artists name or album name - this is to promote the artist or their album

  2. Includes the release date - this is so the target audience know when it is available to purchase

  3. Includes ratings and reviews - this is important as it tells the audience how the product has been rated to try and promote it

  4. A strong image relating to the artist, the song or both - This helps show the audience who it is straight away and helps link the poster to the Digi-Pak

  5. Can include website information so the audience can take a further look at the artists work

  6. May include information about where it can be accessed such as spotify, apple music
