This video is about two brothers and the different paths they take in life and the consequences of this. One of the brothers gets into dancing and becomes very successful whereas the other brother becomes part of a gang and gets into illegal activities which results in him getting shot in the end of the music video. It is a very intense and emotional music video as the audience see the two brothers growing up and how they grow apart. There is no direct form of performance in the music video other than when one of the brothers performs some dance moves. I found this an inspiring music video as the story line is very in depth and isn't the typical cliche narrative of girl meets boy and romance that so often appears in pop music videos. I believe this video is an excellent example of a heavily narrative and story based music video as it is different and unique and is therefore a good video to analyse as some of the techniques used in this video could be interesting to use in my groups video.
Camera:

There are lots of close ups of tattoo's, cigarettes being lit and drugs which set the scene for events that occur later in the video.

Close ups of the two brothers faces at the beginning of the video are also shown to express their emotions. One is crying whilst the other one is praying. This sets the scene for later in the video when one brother takes the route in life that gives him hope whilst the other takes the route that leads to his downfall.

A panning shot is shown of the slum and the poverty surrounding it and is used to move the video on to a different location.

During the video close ups of objects such as knives, guns and drugs are shown which represent the impact that the lifestyle has had on the elder brother.

In complete contrast to this you then have panning shots of the younger brother break dancing and the support he is receiving.

A cantered angle shot is shown after the eldest brother stabs the character in the video which is used to show his disorientation. After he has been shot a close up is used followed by a panning shot to show how isolated and along the eldest brother in.

Whereas in contrast, juxtaposing shots of the younger brother are shown displaying him surrounded by friends and fans supporting him.
Editing:

Slow editing is used during this video to allow them to linger on the more emotional shots for longer to force the audience into thinking more about what they are seeing.

At the beginning, discontinuity editing is used to show the difference between the young boys innocence and their father.

When the brother is dancing slow paced editing is generally used to show the highlights of him dancing and to emphasise the joy around him

Whereas when the eldest brother is in shot the editing tends to be faster to emphasise the chaos in his life.

Most of the transition cuts are straight cuts so as not to distract too much from the narrative

There is also a montage created of the actions taken by the elder brother to show the accumulative negative effects of his actions.
Mise-En-Scéne:

The location used is very deprived and reflects the hardships of life in their society

The low key lighting and the father beating the mother sets the scene for events later on in the music video

The contrast between the two brothers - One brother who perseveres with his dancing career and the other who who gets into gang violence and drugs
Sound:

The music is used to change the story from a depressing narrative to a motivating and uplifting piece and it builds up the intensity for the narrative

The first 45 seconds of the music video is without the soundtrack to set the scene and show the poverty of the area.

Diegetic sounds in the clip such as the female cries against domestic abuse and gunshots show the impact of actions taken.

The pace and intensity of the music sets the pace of the music video and therefore the pace of the editing which is certainly useful in the directing and planning stages as it gives you a starting point for the pace your story should move at
